The Longest Lake in the World (The stuff on this webpage is mentioned on page 29 of my book)
Map of New England, with labeled locations:
Bufflehead Lake (Camp) - in Maine
Gloucester (Home) - in Massachusetts
Longest Lake (I went fishing here) - on border of MA, CT, and RI
New Haven (Yale College...Gumpy & Meemo) - in Connecticut
There is a lake right near the place where three states (Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island) touch. This lake may not look very big on a map, but I’m pretty sure it is the longest lake in the world.
Longest in terms of its name, I mean.
Lake Chargoggagoggmanchauggagoggchaubunagungamaugg is sort of on the way from my house to Gumpy & Meemo’s house in New Haven. Every time we drove by it, I tried to read the sign and memorize the name. Sign for Lake ChargoggagoggmanchauggagoggchaubunagungamauggBut it’s funny how your brain works. When I saw the sign coming up, I would tell myself to start in the middle (because I already had the first part memorized), but no matter how hard I tried, my eyes would always go to the start of the name.

I finally did get the whole thing memorized, but then I found out the name on the sign is actually MISSPELLED! In two places! Can you spot the errors?

The name is Native American and comes from the Nipmuc language. People think it means something like “fishing place at the boundaries — neutral meeting grounds.” But other people say it means “You fish on your side. I fish on my side. Nobody fishes in the middle.” (Granpa says that’s a bunch of hooey!)

If you want to hear how the name is pronounced, here’s Granpa saying it.

If you memorize the name, please comment below. And if you know any other weird geographical names (only real ones!), please tell me.

  1. hey, cheesie, for some reason I can not listen for to the recording, although my laptop has adobe 10.

    1. I think there’s a glitch on my website. I will ask my Aunt Brenda to help fix it. I’ll let you know.

  2. Hi one time i went to my camp called camp daydreams with my best friend fron school for one whole week and when we went to go stay at a haunted house me and my friends wrestled the orlder kids.

  3. Hey Cheesie, I just want to say I love your books. Anyways, I just found out the longest word in the English language is 189,819 letters long and takes 3 and a half hours to say. Apparently it’s the scientific name for a protein called titin.

    1. That is a long word. I asked my science teacher, and he said it is the same chemical name in every language, so it is not actually an English word.

  4. Wow. The name of that lake is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO long that instead of pronouncing it the right way, I pronounce it something like this:
    Lake Chugga-ma-go-gagg-gog-ga-gog-go-manch-augog-gog-gagga-cha-buna-gun-gam-augg.

I’m very sure that’s not how you’re supposed to pronounce it. I think the really hard part about pronouncing the lake’s name is that it’s really hard to put all those letters together.

    1. P.S. I am going to 2nd Session at camp for 4 weeks. My brother is going to camp seagull for 2 weeks. (He is 7.)

  5. i couldn’t hear it,even when my speaker was volume 100/100

    -Lim Yee Zhi

p.s. Please do the dab hahahahahahaha

      BYE!!

(P.S. I wish I could go to camp windward! WIND-WHOOP!

  7. It’s pretty funny. I had a middle school teacher in Palm Harbor, FL who taught me the name of this lake. I forget if it was 6th, 7th or 8th grade. Nevertheless, it was more than 25 years ago and I still remember the name of this lake. If it wasn’t already committed to my memory, I’m fairly certain I couldn’t remember the name of this lake now if my life depended on it.

  8. I’m sure you’ve heard this before but; WHO COMES UP WITH THESE NAMES?! like seriously it could be lake happy butterfly or something but they made it Lake super long name. You know?

    1. Answer: I don’t know how the names get picked. But I would love to fish in Lake Happy Butterfly.

  9. That word is so long !!!I invented a word called
kreakeyo . It means brain .😄🐶🐱I got 10 pets and none of them have long names

  10. it translates as : City of angels, great city of immortals, magnificent city of the nine gems, seat of the king, city of royal palaces, home of gods incarnate, erected by Vishvakarman at Indra’s behest

    1. Wow! Think of how awful it would be if you lived there and had to right that every time you wrote your home address!

  11. there’s this weird place name in Thailand (im from it) and it goes like this: Krungthepmahanakhon Amonrattanakosin Mahintharayutthaya Mahadilokphop Noppharatratchathaniburirom Udomratchaniwetmahasathan Amonphimanawatansathit Sakkathattiyawitsanukamprasit
    กรุงเทพมหานคร อมรรัตนโกสินทร์ มหินทรายุธยา มหาดิลกภพ นพรัตนราชธานีบูรีรมย์ อุดมราชนิเวศน์มหาสถาน อมรพิมานอวตารสถิต สักกะทัตติยวิษณุกรรมประสิทธิ์

    * note: I cannot pronounce it.

  12. Erratas: It should be…manchaug… rather than …manchaog… and …gungamaugg… rather than …gunguhgamaugg…

  13. I like your books. are they inspired by real live events? are there going to be new ones in the future? my favorite character is Georgie.

    1. You know, I can’t remember. It’s been so long since Granpa and I went there to fish.

    1. I think it is wrong! Listen to both Granpa and this other guy. The guy says “gog” at the end, but it’s supposed to be “maug.”

  14. Weird name…..but what is the use of such a long name if some people cant even say it??????

  15. Thats not the largest word in the english alphabet. The longest word has 1,909 letters!!!

  16. loved your books!! my teacher read me the 1 one and i loved it! so i kept going! i am on your 2 book now!

  17. Dear Cheesie,
I showed the lake name to my parents and sister Piper and they were amazed!

    1. {I erased what you wrote. You were absolutely correct, but I didn’t want other readers to see the answer.}

  18. everyone probably knows this, mary pippins:supercalfiragilisticexpialodocious
    made up

    1. I read that, too…but it’s a chemical name, so it really isn’t English.

  19. you said that how to pronounce it would be here but Steve Colter came to my school witch is Wauconda Grade School!

  20. Two things:
    1. I memorized pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis too.
    2. The guy who made up the word for a fear of long words (word is hippopotomonstrosesquippedaaliophobia) is a real jerk.

  21. The longest word in the world is pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis, a lung disease.
    I memorized it!!!

    1. You’re right, except it’s a medical word…and medical and chemical words are sort of made-up.

  22. I know a hill called taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateapokaiwhenuakitanatahu. I know a fear called hippopotomonstrosesquippedaaliophobia is a fear of long words

    1. I think you are the first ever to use the word “irony” in a Cheesie comment. It’s a good word!
