GJ Prott: Ms. or Mrs.? (The stuff on this webpage was mentioned on page 189 in my book.)

Illustration of a smiling woman (GJ Prott)I think Glenora Jean Prott was a Ms., not a Mrs., but maybe you have a different opinion.

Here’s the way I figured it:

  1. She told us that she and Elaine were the Prott sisters.
  2. That meant that they both had the same last name.
  3. In the olden days women always changed their last name when they got married.
  4. Glenora Jean was still a Prott, so she didn’t change her name.
  5. Therefore, she never got married and was Ms. Prott.

Glenn Phillips agrees with me.
Of course I could just ask G.J. Prott, but what fun would that be?

Please tell me if you think I am wrong or you have a different way to figure this out.

Comments from my Readers & Friends

  1. I think shes a Mrs.Prott because it said in the book a LADY came out and i think that really the word lady is for oldeer grown ups and woman seems like a “Ms”

  2. maybe G. J. Prott was married but then her husband died and she was so sad she changed it back

  3. We think she wasn’t married because she wasn’t wearing a wedding ring (or at least Cheesie didn’t mention seeing one). Some students in our class think she may be divorced and sold her wedding ring or she was married but never changed her name (she was ahead of her time!).

P.S. We can’t wait to meet you today at our town library!!!

  4. Well, it can be a Mrs. because the two sisters may not made the husband change her name.Besides, there’s 3 miller’s in my class

  5. Well I think your rit=ght she is a Ms. but another way that it proves shes a Ms, is that she could have once been married but her husband died and she didn’t want to be reminded of him because its too sad.

  6. Do you know the show sister wives they could have married that one person together and now he’s living in her house

  7. my aunts kathy and dalby both married the same brothers, so therefore, g.j. prott may have married two brothers with her sister.

  8. I tottaly think its a Ms. Beause in the pictures all the plants were overgrown and huspand always mow the lawn right? And a huspand probably would have been lounging around on the couch when Cheesie came in. It was very easy to reconize.

    1. But what if she’d been married a long time ago, and her husband died? Then she’d still be Mrs.

  9. people could choose to change their last name they don’t have to. If she was the only person who lived there she could be a widow. If she was a widow she would be called miss, she wouldn’t have told you people don’t like to talk about those things. If she wasn’t a widow she would still be called miss.

  10. it can be mrs. because 1 of my teachers was getting married and she said that she doesn’t have to change her last name

  11. Well, your way is probably right, but Ms. Prott could have married someone with the same last name as her. Therefor, she could be a ‘Mrs.’

    1. Yeah, that could’ve happened, but when she told me about her sister, I think she would’ve mentioned that.

  12. I think she is a Ms. because she is really nice and she was probably married but then they might of gotten divorced and she changed her last name to Prott. I think this because my parents are divorced and my mom is a Ms.

  13. I think she is a Ms. because I have read the book and completely agree with you.

    Sincerely,
    Ian Molloy

  14. i dont care but its probably a mrs you know why she said she lives alone and her husband pasted away

  15. Dear Cheesie Mack,
You know, it’s a possibility that she did get married and is a Mrs., but she decided to keep her last name.

  16. maybe mrs. cause maybe by coincidence G.J Prott and her sister got married and their husbands’ surname both are Prott.

    1. Could be, but I think that’s unlikely. But if they married brothers, you’d think G.J. Prott might have mentioned that when she talked about her sister.

  17. I think she is a Ms. because my mom also changed her name when she got married, and her original name was Prott, so she never got married, unless you’re half right and half wrong Cheesie, and she divorced or her husband died, and that makes her a Miss.

  18. Bri, she was the world’s most AWESOME TEACHER EVER!!! And Cheesie, her last name was Cheema! That is almost rarer than Prott!!!!!!!!¡

    1. That could be…but I think the name Prott is kind of rare, so a Prott/Prott wedding would be even rarer. But it could happen. Maybe…

  19. I agree with you but wouldn’t she be a Miss……Mrs= Married
    Miss=Not Married
    Ms. Married or not married
(usually they don’t want people to know)
Also i agree with your reasons i think she was never married or she was and her husband died or she got divorced but she (probably) isn’t married

    1. Can you please replay to mine i want to know what you think of my comment…thanks (in advance)

  20. Elaine and Glenora Jean are sister in laws because one of them could have married the others brother.

  21. Well you never know.I think Elaine and Glenora Jean belong to that cultor where men can be married to more than one wife. And Glenora Jean and her sister got married to the same man.But when he died Glenora Jean didn’t want to be sad so she took off her wedding ring and took down all the pictures of him and her.
    sincerely, Ashley

  22. Mrs. Prott is a widow( know you will like that word) and changed her last name back to prott making her a Mrs.

  23. I think that Glenora Gean Prott was Mrs. and mabey her husband died. Other than that i really dont know…

  24. I figured if you wanted to know weather Ms. Prott was married or not you could a)just ask b)look around her house and see if there were any pictures of a possible husband c)look for a ring on her finger or d) maybe her husband died or she got divorced and the thought of her husband was to painful so she took down all of the pictures of him and she changed her name back to Prott. Besides i don’t care if Glenn agrees with you i have my own logic that could be just as right as yours.

    1. a) I never asked because I thought it was butting in.
      b) I was only in a couple of rooms of her house, and I didn’t want to snoop.
      c) She wasn’t wearing a ring.
      d) Could be. I never thought of her changing her name.

Your logic is very good. Glenn never said I was right. He just said I “probably” was right.

    1. But couldn’t her husband live with the mother and her because she was very rich didn’t u read the very end of it

  25. She could’ve gotten married then gotten divorced and changed her name back. But i think that she never got married.

  26. maybe Mrs. Prott married a man with the last name Prott and her sister Mrs/Ms. Prott married, but decided to keep her maiden name.

  27. prott probably is her maiden name, but she could have gotten married, and then divorced and changed her name back, and her sister could have gotten married and done the same thing, she just didn’t get married

  28. Well, maybe she married a man whose last name was Prott and then her sister married that man’s brother.

  29. Glenora Jean Prott could’ve been married at one time. Her husband could’ve died or she could’ve divorced him. Some women change their name back to their maiden name when their husband dies or they get divorced.

    1. She wasn’t…I think. But I’m not sure. Next time I see her, I’ll look.

  30. Well, this is HIGHLY improbable, but what if they both were born with the last name Prott, but then Glenora Jean married a man who ALSO had the last name Prott. Then, her last name would still be Prott, but she would be a Mrs.

    1. That is really good logic. I never thought of that possibility. (But is is highly improbable!)
